Each year a Union College graduate receives the opportunity to live in Durban as part of a contribution by The Gift of Hope founder Lauren Cohen to the Union College's Minerva Fellows Program. This student volunteers on-site with Gift of Hope projects for a total of nine months following graduation and then returns to campus to share the experience with their peers. The Gift of Hope is proud to introduce the third Minerva Fellow, Winnie Wakaba, and to welcome her to Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust and Durban this July! Continue reading...

Last month, The Gift of Hope brought KidzAlive, a child friendly psychosocial support program for children with HIV, to their new partner site, Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust. Staff members who will be part of the Project STAR team and include home based carers, nurses and HIV counselors, were provided with 12 days of training on this exceptional tool and are excited to begin working with the children using their new skills. Recently, caregivers of former Sinikithemba patients provided The Gift of Hope with a peek into their lives following the clinic's closure and their impressions of the KidzAlive psychosocial support program. Following the closure of Sinikithemba Clinic at McCord Hospital, The Gift of Hope focused on helping these patients transition to the government sector for care and offered critically important psycho social support services to children and their caregivers; services which are not typically provided in the government hospitals and clinic sites. KidzAlive, a child friendly program geared for 4-11 year olds, was one of a handful of programs funded by The Gift of Hope. Read what they had to say...

December 1, 2012 marks more than three decades since the HIV virus was first identified in humans. This day, celebrated globally as World AIDS Day, gives us the opportunity to join the international community in commemoration of those that have passed from HIV/AIDS, to raise awareness of the disease, and to celebrate the strides made over the years in treatment and prevention.
